She is known for her starring role as Anne Shirley in the CBC/Netflix drama series Anne with an E, inspired by the 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. At their first encounter as classmates, Gilbert was known to tease Anne by giving her the nickname Carrots. Amybeth McNulty plays Anne, an unwed and orphaned teenager who has a life that is filled with violence in orphanages and houses. Anne thirteen-year-old orphan living in a hostile home for much of her youth, is sent through a mistake to the aging Cuthbert siblings on Prince Edward Island. They are all happy as the series concludes at the end of 1919. Gilbert has aged to 55, but is still passionately in love with Anne.
